The LTRC Veterans’ Program is a therapeutic/ adaptive program that partners veterans with our amazing team of horses.  The mission for this program is to assist military veterans utilizing LTRC services that provide leadership and guidance for equine assisted activities and therapies. Participants learn riding and horsemanship skills, along with coping skills for stress, building a trusting relationship with their horse partner and improving overall mental health and well being.  We work with veterans with various physical, cognitive and emotional challenges.  LTRC has teamed up with local veterans‘ medical centers and clinics as well as individual veterans, and members of the medical community to make this incredible program available to veterans of any age or riding ability.  Experience with horses is not required.

The goal of this therapeutic program is to translate time spent with a horse into a meaningful, healing relationship that improves psychological health.  To accomplish this, participants in the Veterans’ Program will interact with the horses in a variety of activities, including grooming, feeding, leading, riding, games and more.

The benefits of therapeutic riding and our Veteran’s program are as diverse as our riders!  Individuals learn about themselves and their horse companions, both on the ground and in the saddle.  The accepting nature and tolerant personality of the horse encourages riders to test the limits of their abilities and learn to make good choices under the guidance of qualified instructors.  As with any athletic activity, we challenge our riders to develop good balance, muscle strength and coordination.  Participants also learn new skills and benefit from time spent with peers, instructors, volunteers and our horses.
